Virtual Knowledge – new forms of knowledge creation and accountability

The Origins and Modifications of the Blue Qur’an
The Blue Qur’an has long been recognised as one of the most significant examples of early Islamic manuscript production, but its exact origins have not yet been firmly established. Past scholarly theories have suggested various locations and contexts including Abbasid Iraq, Fatimid North Africa, Aghlabid North Africa or Sicily, and Umayyad Spain.

Before the Qurʾan: Arabic's history across Greek, South Semitic, and Aramaic writing traditions
This talk will survey the different orthographic traditions used to render the Arabic language before the emergence of a single written standard in early Islamic times. By combining evidence from these sources, we can form a detailed, evidence-based picture of Arabic's phonology, morphology, and dialect geography in pre-Islamic times. Following this, we will attempt to understand the relationship, both diachronically and geographically, of the dialect represented in Qur'anic orthography with these sources.

Visualising Time-Space in East Asia: Mapping ‘Round Heavens & Square Earth’ from Ancient Rotating Devices to Late Modern Commercial Maps
Early Chinese astrological devices, shi 式/栻 , usually translated as “cosmographs,” “diviners’ boards,” or more recently as “diviners’ mantic astrolabes” or simply “cosmic models,” are known from the 2nd century BC. Made of lacquered wood, these portable instruments consist of a static square plate, representing the Earth, and a rotating disc placed on top of it, representing the Heavens.
