ONLINE EVENT – German Unification in a World Perspective
German unification and the ensuing end of the Cold War were undoubtedly, in Hegel’s words, “world historical” events. However, current reflections on the meaning of German unification are often limited to German viewpoints. This panel discussion, organized by the American Academy in Berlin and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, will address the thirtieth anniversary of German unification from various national and generational perspectives as well as a range of disciplines, including history and the social sciences.

Every year, more than a million men in the USA undergo, with associated risks, painful needle biopsies for prostate cancer, and upward of 100,000 have radical prostatectomies, often resulting in crippling side effects, such as incontinence, impotence and psychological trauma. But the shocking fact is most of these men would never have died of this common form of cancer, which frequently grows so slow that it never even leaves the prostate. How did we get to a point where so many unnecessary tests and surgeries are being done resulting in a multibillion-dollar industry?

The Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities to receive extensive collection of hand-written documents from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation
The gift of a manuscript collection from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation will significantly increase the Academy’s archive holdings. The collection includes hitherto unknown documents, a manuscript that was believed to be lost, and letters that were previously unknown to researchers: The collection contains 98 letters written by or to Alexander von Humboldt during the years 1798 to 1858, two scientific manuscripts and two letters between third parties.
